Court Etiquette: Learn the Rules Before You Smash!
Share
If you're a beginner, one of the first things you need to learn (before you start smashing the ball around!) is the rules and etiquette of pickleball.
Pickleball is more than just a game—it’s about fun, respect, and building an inclusive community.
Following these tips will help you get the most out of your time on the court while making sure everyone has a great experience.
General Etiquette
- Welcome newcomers: Be the friendly face that helps others feel at ease.
- Introduce yourself: Start each game by introducing yourself if you’re unfamiliar with your partner or opponents.
- Encourage others: Be patient and positive, especially with less-experienced players—they’ll appreciate your support.
- Compliment often: Acknowledge great shots or effort with kind words—it makes the game more fun for everyone.
- Respect personal space: Keep a respectful distance from other players during serves and returns to avoid distractions.
- Keep noise to a minimum: Avoid excessive talking or loud noises during play to help everyone stay focused. (Check out our blog on noise mitigation for ideas on how to coexist peacefully with your neighbours.)
- Say “thank you” and “good game,” and touch the paddles after the game: Always thank your partner and opponents for a fun game. After the final point, come together to the net and tap the paddles.
Faults, Fair Play, and Game Flow
- Call your own faults: Take responsibility if you or your partner steps into the no-volley zone (kitchen) during a volley.
- Play fair in casual games:
- Help weaker opponents by giving them shots they can return—it’s a great way to build skills.
- In the same vein, challenge yourself by hitting to stronger players to improve your own game.
- Keep the game moving: Be ready to play when it’s your turn, and minimize delays between points. If you need a break, let your partner and opponents know.
- Resolve disputes calmly: If there’s a disagreement over calls, discuss it respectfully and calmly. Using hand signals along with verbal communication can help avoid confusion.
Basic Rules to Remember
As you play more, you’ll remember the rules easier. When you’re just starting out, and people call rules on you, try not to get frustrated. Remember that you’re learning and will eventually get the hang of it.
Serving Rules:
- Players are allowed only one serve attempt unless it’s a “let” serve (the ball hits the net but still lands in the correct court).
- Both feet must remain behind the baseline until the ball is struck.
The Two-Bounce Rule:
- After the serve, each team must let the ball bounce once before hitting it. This keeps the game balanced and ensures fair play.
Kitchen Rules:
- Players cannot volley from within the no-volley zone (kitchen) or touch the line when volleying. This includes any part of their body or paddle. If you lean forward, smash the ball out of the air over the net, and then fall into the kitchen, that is also a fault.
Line Calls:
- Any ball that hits a line is considered in (except for the kitchen line during a serve).
- If you’re unsure about a ball on your side of the court, always call it IN and give your opponents the benefit of the doubt.
Communication is Key
- Call the score loudly and clearly: This avoids confusion and keeps everyone on the same page.
- Announce “OUT” loudly: Use your voice and a hand signal to clearly indicate when a ball is out.
- Respect the rotation system: During open play, share court time with others instead of sticking to your usual group.
